Every summer, my kids get one special week they look forward to more than any other — Camp Mommy. It’s the one week with no other camps or Vacation Bible School (VBS) scheduled, and I plan all the activities myself. It’s simple, budget-friendly, and packed with memory-making fun.
Believe it or not, this is the only camp they actually request each year! Sorry kids, it’s just one week — but it’s always the highlight of summer.
Camp Mommy is a DIY summer camp where I plan a week of activities for my kids — from crafts to field trips. It doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. The goal is intentional time together, making memories outside our normal routines.
Over the years, Camp Mommy has evolved, and I’ve learned a few things along the way (like maybe don’t take too many kid-requested suggestions — things can get wild!). But no matter what, we always have a blast.
Here are some of our favorite Camp Mommy ideas — both from past years and plans for this summer. Many of these are flexible and can be adapted based on your kids’ ages and your location.
We head to Hobby Lobby with a small budget (around $20 per kid), and each child picks an activity, not just a toy. Past projects have included:
It’s a messy day at the kitchen table, but so much fun! We also made Jolly Rancher lollipops, which were a big hit!
Simple but always a favorite! My kids love this, especially when they get to soak mom. Water balloon fights are a must during Camp Mommy.
One year, we made treats and delivered them to our local police and fire stations. Bonus: we got a tour of the firehouse! It’s a meaningful way to teach kids about serving their community — even the littlest ones.
Many local theaters offer discounted tickets for early showtimes during the summer. It’s a fun, easy outing and a great indoor option when it’s hot out.
We’re zoo members, so this one’s a great low-cost option for us. Some years we go all day, other years we keep it simple with just indoor exhibits (especially when it’s really hot). Either way, it’s a win.
Perfect for younger kids — and mom gets a break while they play. My oldest is almost outgrowing this, but it’s still a hit with the littles.
Last year, Dad joined us for Camp Mommy! He came to breakfast and took the kids to the church playground. You could also plan a lunch date with Dad or a quick visit to his office — the kids love it (and I think he does too!).
If you’re in the Houston area, here are some of our top Camp Mommy picks:
We love going here — our membership makes it an easy, affordable outing. The kids usually get to pick one special exhibit, and the planetarium is always a favorite.
Go early! This splash pad has sand — a huge hit with my kids. Afterward, we feed the ducks and turtles at the nearby pond. Simple, fun, and totally free.
This year we’re planning a NASA visit with friends. If you’re local, it’s a great educational adventure!
If you’re thinking I must be supermom for doing this every year — trust me, I’m not. Camp Mommy is simply my way of being intentional with my kids for one dedicated week each summer. It’s easier for me to carve out one week to focus than to do this all summer long.
When I first started, I did a week for each child. It was wonderful, but not realistic while working. This version — one shared week — is our happy compromise. And it works.
Plus, having the world’s best assistant for my business makes all the difference in keeping things moving.
Whether you’re a planner or more go-with-the-flow, Camp Mommy is a great way to slow down and make meaningful memories. You don’t need a big budget or a perfect plan — just a little time and a lot of love.
Let me know if you try it or have your own fun ideas — I’m always looking for inspiration!
