Back-to-school season means new schedules, new routines, and let’s be honest — a whole lot of chaos. A more structured day is great in theory, but when you add in practices, games, and after-school activities, things can start to feel overwhelming fast.
As a mom of four (all old enough to have their own sports and activities), I’ve lived this struggle firsthand. Over the years, I’ve figured out a few systems and sanity-saving tricks that make our busy weeknights just a little easier — and I’m sharing them with you today!
The more kids and activities you add to the calendar, the more important it is to have a system in place. For us, that means one thing:
👉 If it’s not on the calendar, it doesn’t exist.
My husband and I share a digital calendar that includes every practice, game, school event, and appointment. It’s the only way I can keep track of who needs to be where and who’s driving them. Communication is key — it takes effort in the beginning, but once you hit your rhythm, it’s a game-changer.
And can we talk about carpooling? If you’re not already on this bandwagon, it’s time. Carpooling saves so much stress (and gas money). I even joke with my friends that I’ll do all the September driving in exchange for extra help in October and November — because that’s my busy season. Find your people and don’t be afraid to ask for help. It really does take a village.
One of the biggest stressors of sports season? Keeping track of all the gear. Over time, I’ve narrowed it down to two things that save my sanity every season:
This box lives in my laundry room and holds all the game-day essentials. Bows, special socks, uniforms — if it’s for a game, it goes in the box. My kids know that after a game, uniforms get dropped in the laundry room, and once they’re clean, they go right back into the box. No more scrambling 10 minutes before leaving to find a missing sock.
At the start of each season, I pack a bag that lives in my car. It starts with sunscreen, small toys, and a few activities for the siblings (because sitting through endless games can be rough). Before each game, I add snacks, water bottles, and sometimes a little treat. Small trucks, coloring books, and even mini Play-Doh sets have been lifesavers during long weekends on the sidelines.
Of course, systems are key — but the right gear can make a huge difference too. Here are some of my favorite finds that help me keep our family moving through school and sports season:
Back-to-school and sports season will always be busy — there’s no way around that. But with a few systems in place, some planning ahead, and the right gear to support you, you can make it manageable (and maybe even enjoyable).
At the end of the day, it’s about finding what works for your family, leaning on your community, and giving yourself grace when things don’t go perfectly. Because let’s face it — no one has it all together, we’re all just doing our best.
Here’s to a smoother (and more organized) season ahead!
